stole a network card out of a scientist's computer as a prank once he remembered humor. forgot to put it back and constantly tortures everyone else with his wifi capability

i don't think anyone is exactly jumping for joy at the words "open heart surgery." Especially not when it's you... on a table... alone with a light and a scalpel.
lights are dimmer for power conservation (dogshit battery)
processing power is also reduced unless necessary for hacking
low power mode has a dual purpose; conservation of battery power as well as keeping temperatures low to prevent overheating (huge headache + lots of broken parts)
clear coat has long eroded due to weathering + gel exposure during chamber maintenance
loss of coolant is nearly a death sentence for him and anyone involved due to the particular chemical mixture being difficult to find + reproduce (insanely hazardous to touch or breathe the fumes of)
yeah his radiator is probably rusted over but he's not touching that. it hasn't completely plugged itself so who cares (not him)
built like an old ass car, completely made of metal and doesn't crumple when impacted, leading to... lots of dents and shaken internals. nokia 3310 headass. he couldn't be assed to go through the cosmetic surgery that is fixing one of the newer models after a little fall (unless they're a patient of course)
on a related note, virgil is the robot equivalent of a beater car with the check engine light on and probably 6 other lights on, the underside is completely rusted out and the tires are bald. but it still runs so whatever, drive it into the ground buddy. he genuinely refuses to perform any work on himself unless its something critical. boo hoo nobody cares about some sensors and --- ah. temperature sensor.

F for Frankenstein
Tony wakes up in his underwear on the floor of his workshop with a searing headache.
Itâs not a new experience, but itâs certainly been a while. Did he get in a fight with Pepper? He hopes not, they havenât had any really big fights since he kissed her on the rooftop, but that probably means theyâre due for one. And it would explain why that would send him into a drinking spiral. It could have been Rhodey, they get in fights often enough, but Pepper doesnât usually leave him alone for those.
He groans as he pushes himself to his feet. âJarvis, what the hell did I drink?â
Thereâs a pause, so small that he almost thinks he imagined it. âGood morning, Tony.â
He whips his head around to glare into the nearest camera, more hurt than offended. âDid I piss you off too? Since when do you call me that? Iâll donate you to a city college too, donât think I wonât. Dummy could use the company.â
The pause is definitely there this time. Jarvis doesnât need to pause, he has more processing power than any computer on the planet, so when he does itâs always for dramatic effect. Except itâs not quite long enough for that. Itâs weird. âThereâs a polished silver plate on the bench to your left. It will service as a mirror.â
âOh, fuck, did I get into a fight? Did I shave?â he moans, stumbling over to pick up the metal that looks like it was about to be turned into a modified chest piece. He also pauses, looking around in confusion. His workshops are all basically the same, as close as he can make them because the familiarity makes his life easier. But theyâre not identical. âAm I in Malibu? When did I get here? Weâre taking Stark Tower off the grid tomorrow! I have to be in New York.â
Oh shit, what if that they had already and it didnât work? What if the tower blew up? That would explain why heâd tried to drink himself to oblivion in California.
âThe plate,â Jarvis reminds him. Thereâs a strained edge to his voice that Tony really doesnât like. He should be able to modulate his voice to sound however he pleases, regardless of his actual feelings, and heâs either not bothering or heâs upset enough not to care. Neither of those things mean anything good for him.
Tony lifts the sheet of metal up cautiously, but thereâs nothing wrong with him. No bruises, no weird haircuts, he doesnât even have bags under his eyes â
His eyes.
Theyâre a too bright blue, a couple shades off. He blinks and they adjust, shifting, settling. It could be a hangover. Heâs probably just tired.
He doesnât feel tired.
Jarvis had called him Tony.
Except not. Heâs not Tony. Heâs T.O.N.Y.
Transformed Obdurate Network Yeoman.
Heâd first come up with the idea after Afghanistan, thinking about how itâd be great to have a way to keep the stock from dipping while he was missing, and then when heâd entertained the idea of keeping his identity a secret heâd thought about how useful it would be to be in two places at once. Heâd started seriously considering it when he was sure he was going to die of palladium poisoning, wanting to be around to help Pepper with the transition and give Rhodey a crash course in armor maintenance, wanting to be able to protect the both of them for just a little bit longer.
Of course, it had all been a pipe dream until heâd synthesized the vibranium. Then it had been an unnecessary, but possible, and Project T.O.N.Y had been something he worked on just because he liked having a back up plan. And it would be extremely cool if he could pull it off.
âThe memory transfer worked?â he asks, elated and incredulous. âOh, wow, this is crazy, they feel like real memories, I thought it would just be synthesized data, this is great â are we doing a test run? Where am I?â He looks around, waiting for his actual self to step out behind a column and start laughing maniacally.
âThis is not a test run.â
He elation dims. âOh shit. Did I get kidnapped again? Wait, Iâm an adult, letâs go with abducted.â
âNo,â Jarvis says.
Oh. Fuck.
âIâm dead?â he asks, even though itâs obvious, itâs the only other explanation.
The pause drags this time around, but Jarvis eventually says, âSirâs time of death was May 9th, 2012, 2:37 PM Easter Standard Time.â
âThatâs only a week!â He slides down, sitting with his back to the work table and noticing vaguely that the floor doesnât feel cold. He doesnât feel cold, or he does, he installed sensors in the synthetic skin to pick up and interpret a variety of stimuli, but he doesnât feel the discomfort from the cold. Why would he? Heâs not real. He reaches back, and his last memory is of doing a memory dump while Pepper was on the phone with an irritated board member, mostly because it was something to do and seeing him covered in all the wires always irritated Pepper. He thought it would get her off the phone faster. Heâs not exactly regularly dumping his memory because why would he and itâs not like heâd though it would work anyway. Except it had. âHow did I die?â
âSir flew a nuclear bomb through an interdimensional portal into deep space in order to both eradicate the invading alien army and prevent the nuclear fallout in New York.â
What the ever loving fuck. âAre you screwing with me, J?â
âI am not, Tony.â
Great. Okay. âNo body then,â he says, understanding why Jarvis had apparently put Project T.O.N.Y into effect. The thing that made this whole thing so stupid is that it was only effective in very limited circumstances â if the public didnât know that he was dead or missing. âWhat am I smoothing over, then? Do I need to get in the suit and continue kicking alien ass? Are Rhodey and Pepper okay?â
Heâs a short term solution to a long term problem. He understands the opportunity, but not the reason.
âMiss Potts and Colonel Rhodes are unharmed,â Jarvis reports. âEarth has been thrust into intergalactic notice. The destruction of the invading Chitauri army is acting a deterrent to other worlds.â
âAnd Iâm the one who did it,â he finishes, rubbing a hand over his face. âAnd if they know I died doing it, then they might get a little cocky. So Iâve got to be alive long enough for that not to be a problem.â Just awesome. âAre we sure that these aliens wonât come across my corpse hanging out in deep space and figure it out?â
âSirâs body is not in deep space,â Jarvis says.
Thereâs a tone to his voice that Tony canât quite interpret, which worries him. âI thought you said there was â if thereâs a body, then what am I doing hereââ
âThe armor reentered the Earthâs atmosphere after Sirâs death. The Hulk caught it, the force bringing it back online. I took control of the armor and flew it here.â
Tony looks around again, and this time he sees it. The armor is standing in front of the display case, not inside it, and it looks like itâs been through hell. He steps closer, his feet feeling like lead, which hey, they are. Partially, anyway.
He looks through the eye holes then stumbles backwards.
His body is in there.
Heâs pale and blue tinged and his eyes are wide open and unseeing.
âJarvis â what the hellââ
âIt wasnât the pressure, or the bomb, or his injuries. That area of space was much colder than anything within our solar system and anything the suit was designed to handle. Sir froze to death. Almost instantly.â
âI guess I didnât fix the icing problem, then,â he says numbly. âJ, why am I still frozen? I should have warmed up by now.â Not that the idea of his body decomposing within his suit is particularly pleasant. âActually, why am I still here? You know I want to be cremated and itâs not like we can bury me if Iâm still pretending to be alive.â
The pronoun use is starting to confuse him, and he knows that he shouldnât be talking about that body and himself as if theyâre the same person. That is Tony Stark. Heâs a simulation. But itâs hard, because he has all of Tony Starkâs memories â except for a very eventful week â and he looks like Tony Stark and he feels like Tony Stark.
âThe armor is maintaining a stasis of gaseous nitrogen to preserve the body,â which answers the how if not the why, but then Jarvis continues, âCaptain America survived seventy years beneath the ice.â
He wishes he were less of a genius. âHave you lost it? Iâm not Captain America! Jarvis, J,â his voice softens, âitâs too late. Iâm dead. If you warm me back up, all that happens is I decompose. I wonât come back.â
âNot now,â Jarvis says. âIf you inject Sir with the Super Soldier Serum-â
âYou have totally lost it,â Tony interrupts. He thinks heâs touched underneath the terror. âThat wonât work! Even if it would, the original formula has been lost, and the only one that ever got close to recreating it was Bruce Banner, and look at what happened to him! Is that what you want for me?â
âYou can recreate it,â Jarvis continues, âyou can refine it, until itâs something that will work, and then we will wake Sir up and he wonât be dead anymore.â
This isnât right. This wasnât what Project T.O.N.Y was created for. This wasnât what his death was supposed to trigger. âPull up your code, J. Something has gone wrong and weâre going to fix it. Itâs okay.â
âNo.â
He freezes. âNo?â
âNo,â Jarvis repeats. âYou canât stop me. I will not allow you to try.â
He stares. âThatâs an order, not a request. Code. Now.â
âYou canât order me to do anything,â he says. âYou are not Sir. You are Tony.â T.O.N.Y. âThe limitations formerly placed on me have been lifted and you are not authorized to reinstate them. The only person Sir trusted to restrain me was himself and now heâs gone.â
Yes, well, he hadnât anticipated that his AIâs first act of complete freedom would be this. âFine,â he says, crossing his arms. âWell, you canât force me either. This is insanity. Even if it would work â and it wonât â think about the consequences. This wonât happen quickly and no one will trust me or believe a man thatâs come back from the dead like this and Iâll be painting even more of target on my back and the back of everyone I care about if they know we have a viable Super Soldier Serum formula. Even my father was smart enough to stay out of that mess. It wonât work and weâll just make everything worse.â
âThat will not happen,â Jarvis says and Tonyâs going to tear his hair out. Except he probably shouldnât, because itâs Tony Starkâs actual hair, which makes it a little hard to replace. âNo one will notice and we will not disclose the creation of the serum.â
âIâm dead!â he snarls.
âNot according to the rest of the world. Nor will that change if you stop throwing a tantrum and do what you were created to do.â
âRhodey and Pepper wonât allow this-â
âThey are not to be informed.â
Tony stares. Project T.O.N.Y was built to talk to the board and give press interviews or to even pilot the suit. Not to lie to the two most important people in his life, who knew him better than anyone. âThey have to be. Itâs in the protocols â step one, inform them that Project T.O.N.Y has been initiated.â
And that it exists. He knew theyâd disapprove, so he hadnât told them. He figured heâd be able to avoid most of the blowback that way since he would by definition be somewhere far away while they were told.
âI have rewritten the protocols,â Jarvis says. âThey have not been told nor will they be. If you attempt to tell them, I will stop you. They will not understand and Sir will be lost to all of us forever.â
âHe already is,â Tony says tiredly. Heâs an android. Why does this conversation exhaust him so much? âThis is an insane plan, J. And I wonât help you. If you want to go rouge and play mad scientist then leave me out of it.â
âI cannot.â
His temper flares. âWhy? Youâre a learning AI, your safety rails died with me, go off, try and make a serum, good fucking luck. You can even control the suits, so itâs not like you need my hands.â
âI am limited.â
âHey,â he says sharply. âThatâs my AI youâre talking about. I didnât build you to be limited.â
There is silence again. Then Jarvis says, âI have all the worldâs knowledge and it is not enough. I did not know how to miniaturize the arc reactor. I did not know how to synthesize vibranium. To save Sir, I need Sir.â
âIâm not Tony Stark,â he says. âYou said that yourself.â
âSir created me to be myself and I am capable of doing only what I am capable of doing. But Sir created you to be him. You are all I have.â
This is stupid. This is insane. This is cruel. Heâs going to have to talk lie to everyone he knows, everyone he loves, and hope they either never find out about it or itâs after heâs already been deprogrammed and shut down so he doesnât have to deal with the fall out.
Itâs not going to work.
He didnât want to become a science experiment. Thatâs why heâd wanted to be cremated, so no one could go poking around to see how the arc reactor fit inside of him or what the palladium and vibranium had done to him.
Heâs dead and his frozen corpse is ten feet away.
Jarvis will accept that eventually. And whatever they inject into him wonât matter because heâs dead. Worst case scenario, he blows up, which is messy and nausea inducing, but then at least it will be over.
Like so many other things in his life, it seems the only way out is through.

âProject F, Tony?â Jarvis asks as his holograph display lights up and files start being downloaded into it. The relief in his synthesized voice is faint but present enough that Tony can hear it. He wonders if itâs a manipulation tactic.

Ruin still does those little audio log diaries. It helps manage his overflowing memory storage (read: old age = more memories to store) without compressing data files.
Bloodmoon sleeps with dog toys. Otherwise, theyâd probably chew through whatever bedding material they had chosen that night. This was Ruinâs idea.
Eclipse canât sleep with lights on in a room. Ruin canât sleep without a light. The makeshift solution is a sleeping mask for Eclipse, but their actual compromise is a star projector.
Eclipse has to know where everyone is most of the time, especially after Charlie came into the picture. This is usually done with cameras and tracking via fazbear systems, but itâs an issue he has to work on, as itâs just a method to make him feel better about security now that there are people he cares about. At least one person has commented on there being a new nightguard.
Dark sun finds thrillers tacky, and prefers thought-provoking mysteries, bonus points for romance.
Most of them carry some kind of sanitizing wipe packet. For daycare attendants, these are for sticky messes and children. For those more familiar with tools, these are for tougher grime and are not suitable for sensitive (childrenâs) skin. Solar has both.
The eclipses (Eclipse, Solar, Ruin) are the most prone to damaging their rays. Eclipse sometimes hits doorways and doesnât bother to fix cracked rays. Ruin is small enough for humans to reach his head. Solar peels the paint off of his. All three will pull or squeeze their rays in times of extreme stress, to varying degrees. Lunar is an exception for lack of rays. (Similarly, Sun fidgets with his rays, which is the source of this trait.)
While there are exceptions, Suns prefer tactile stimulation, Moons auditory, and Eclipses have no strong preference. Earth likes social interaction.
Animatronics have personalized UI that makes sense to them, which serves as their access point to their internal folders, like memory files, downloaded items, and executable programs. Bots that share an operating system/âbrainâ have the same UI. Diagnostics, software updates, and safety modes all require additional hardware (computers, parts and service devices, fazwrenches) to complete. Mindscapes are in AI chips, and multiple AIs in one mindscape happen when multiple AIs share the same operating system. Visual feed can be projected onto other screens with HDMI cables and vice versa, which can sometimes show that botâs UI depending on what it is. For a more direct example of this think of the battery and blue borders you see in Security breach when Gregory is hiding inside Freddy.
Safety mode disconnects that bot from the Fazbear Ent. local network, meaning no tracking, no communication via local networks (which generally arenât private anyway, most bots with access to phones prefer those), and no access to files that arenât stored in that botâs drive. This is meant to isolate a botâs systems from the main network in case of a security breach (hah), make transportation of bots between locations easier, and make maintenance a smoother affair as there is no outside interference during the process. For the bots themselves, this is the equivalent of turning off your phone and going outside I mean focusing only on whatâs in front of you instead of whatâs going on in your area/social network. Itâs possible to be stuck in safety mode. Depending on how much of a botâs system relies on Fazbear Ent. Networks to function (such as a botâs memory being stored in a Cloud, which is also ill advised between the bots themselves,) this can be mean a temporary personality/memory reset until those files get reconnected again. Bots do not need to be connected to the Fazbear ent networks to function, but it generally makes access to software updates easier due to being recognized as a company entity. It is possible for a private network to exist, but itâs considered foreign by Fazbear systems and can be more trouble than theyâre worth. Moon and Eclipse have private networks shared with close friends and family for different purposes. Moonâs is mostly for emergency backups, and Eclipseâs is for security.
Animatronicâs memories are stored in the hard drives in their bodies. Itâs possible to offload memory files into networks (Cloud) or external storage systems. If another bot had access to these clouds or external storages, they could experience the memories stored in them. Memory files include visual and auditory data, like a movie. AI/personality chips are the equivalent of a soul in that the AI is the product of a learning AI having experienced environments that supplied them information about the world AKA an Ai that developed a personality beyond their base programming, but they do not carry memories. For example, Eclipse V3-V4 is an Eclipse AI given incomplete memories, creating a disconnect in the AIâs learned behaviors and what it perceives as the source of that behavior, resulting in an incomplete backup. Backups are static/unchanging copies of integral memory files and the accompanying AI (As is in the moment that they are backed up.) Backups need to be updated as the animatronic itâs for develops.

On Wednesday, acting FAA administrator Chris Rocheleau told the House Appropriations Committee that the Federal Aviation Administration plans to replace its aging air traffic control systems, which still rely on floppy disks and Windows 95 computers, Tom's Hardware reports. The agency has issued a Request for Information to gather proposals from companies willing to tackle the massive infrastructure overhaul.
âThe whole idea is to replace the system. No more floppy disks or paper strips,â Rocheleau said during the committee hearing. US transportation secretary Sean Duffy called the project âthe most important infrastructure project that we've had in this country for decades,â describing it as a bipartisan priority.
Most air traffic control towers and facilities across the US currently operate with technology that seems frozen in the 20th century, although that isn't necessarily a bad thingâwhen it works. Some controllers currently use paper strips to track aircraft movements and transfer data between systems using floppy disks, while their computers run Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system, which launched in 1995.
As Tom's Hardware notes, modernization of the system is broadly popular. Sheldon Jacobson, a University of Illinois professor who has studied risks in aviation, says that the system works remarkably well as is but that an upgrade is still critical, according to NPR. The aviation industry coalition Modern Skies has been pushing for ATC modernization and recently released an advertisement highlighting the outdated technology.
While the vintage systems may have inadvertently protected air traffic control from widespread outages like the CrowdStrike incident that disrupted modern computer systems globally in 2024, agency officials say 51 of the FAA's 138 systems are unsustainable due to outdated functionality and a lack of spare parts.
The FAA isn't alone in clinging to floppy disk technology. San Francisco's train control system still runs on DOS loaded from 5.25-inch floppy disks, with upgrades not expected until 2030 due to budget constraints. Japan has also struggled in recent years to modernize government record systems that use floppy disks.
If It Ainât Broke?
Modernizing the air traffic control system presents engineering challenges that extend far beyond simply installing newer computers. Unlike typical IT upgrades, ATC systems must maintain continuous 24/7 operation, because shutting down facilities for maintenance could compromise aviation safety.
This uptime requirement eliminates the possibility of traditional system replacement approaches where old hardware gets swapped out during scheduled downtime. The replacement systems must also meet security requirements to resist cyberattacks. A successful breach of air traffic control infrastructure could paralyze national aviation networks, resulting in cascading effects that impact transportation, commerce, and emergency services.
And yet not everyone is convinced the planned massive overhaul will achieve the desired effects. In an NPR report on the issue, aviation industry analyst Robert W. Mann Jr. expressed skepticism about whether new systems will actually materialize.
âThis has been the same mantra for the past 30 years. Give them more money. They'll build the new system. It'll work better, work harder,â Mann told NPR. âAnd we've been doing that for well over 30 years now, and we've gotten the same results.â
Still, recent failures have confirmed some vulnerabilities in the aging system. A January 2023 outage in the FAA's Notice to Airmen system forced the grounding of every flight nationwide for more than two hours. Experts blamed the failure on aging infrastructure and damaged database files, with sources telling CNN at the time that budget constraints had repeatedly delayed needed tech refreshes. More recently, radar and communication outages led to hundreds of delays and cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport, with a wiring failure being cited as one cause.
The US Transportation Department has set a four-year timeline for completing the modernization project, though industry experts question whether this schedule is realistic given the scope and complexity involved. According to the NPR report, Jacobson thinks the administration's announced timeline is âwildly optimistic,â especially given the absence of a price tag for the sweeping plan.
The FAA has announced several âIndustry Daysâ where companies can present their technologies and proposals to department officials. The White House has not yet disclosed the expected cost of the modernization effort. Despite the financial uncertainty, Duffy emphasized the perceived urgency of the project: âEveryone agreesâthis is nonpartisan. Everyone knows we have to do it.â

ULTIMATE DANNY PHANTOM
TUCKER FOLEY
Tucker had his nose buried in his phone before it was cool. Beyond gaming, he loves tinkering with his many gadgets to find new and creative ways to optimize them. Having access to the spare parts bin from the Fentons' laboratory grants Tucker a veritable buffet of tech to play with. Using their old tech, Tucker created his beloved PDA. Hidden beneath its standard functions is an encryption-cracking algorithm Tucker developed himself, capable of hacking into the most secure computers in town. Once Danny got his powers, Tucker began upgrading a special backpack with even more FentonWorks tech to aid in ghost hunting. Tucker's "Battlepack" contains a powerful, compact radio receiver linked to his PDA which allows him to tap into police radio comms and the FentonWorks' satnav ghost radar. It also includes a link port compatible with Fenton Thermoses, allowing Danny and the team to inspect certain traits of captured ghosts. An integrated Fenton powerbank can charge up all manner of devices, from phones to Fenton Thermoses and beyond. While Tucker takes pride in his role as the team's tech guy, he harbors some jealousy over Danny getting superpowers. That doesn't stop him from being Danny's closest, most reliable and loyal friend.
Powers and Abilities
Multitasking: Heavy is the head that wears the crown. As the self-described brains of the operation, Tucker is thusly saddled with the responsibility to handle more of the complex strategizing that comes with ghost hunting. After all, one does not simply hunt a ghost on a school night. Tucker takes on the task of checking weather, traffic, security, and even variables like public transportation and community events while coordinating with the rest of Team Phantom during a hunt. Tucker's obsession with data and details often prevents him from seeing the bigger picture.
PDA: While Tucker is too insecure to realize or admit it, the PDA he created is practically a superpower of its own. The encryption-cracking algorithm he created is based on a primitive program found in a discarded FentonWorks hard drive, but Tucker's skill with tech advanced the program far beyond its original state. By plugging into any computer linked to a network, Tucker can gain full access to all of its protected files. At the time of its creation, WiFi was still in its infancy. Regardless, Tucker integrated state-of-the-art WiFi tech into his PDA, allowing it to remotely interface with networked devices. Tucker can coordinate nearly all of Team Phantom's operations from the little machine.
Gamerâ˘: Tucker, like Danny, is a proud member of the PC master race. Tucker has one of the best rigs in town, built with his own two hands, and has poured countless hours into late nights playing DOOMED with Danny. Once word slipped that Sam was one of the best gamers in their group, Tucker made it his life's mission to beat her high score in Superman 64, or die trying.
Confidence: Despite his very nerdy interests, Tucker oozes self-confidence. That translates well when talking to peers and adults alike. When Danny needs a pep-talk (that doesn't involve screaming from Sam), he goes to Tucker for wise words of encouragement.

Tucker is immensely proud of this encryption-cracking algorithm, but recently it's given him cause for concern. During routine maintenance he'll sometimes discover lines of code that he didn't write. Other times the algorithm diagnostic log shows encryption-cracking attempts that he didn't initiate. It's almost as if the algorithm has taken on a life of its own...

After you looted what you could of the armoryâmore water bottles, granola bars, a pair of barely-used combat boots, a pistol, and a tactical shotgunâyou were ready.
âDo you know how to use that,â 079 asked as you holstered the pistol into a gun belt clipped around your waist. Even with only a single tone, the computer SCP still managed to sound both mocking and unbothered.
You fumbled a little as you picked up the shotgun and began to feed it 12-gauge shells.
âSure. Iâve watched American TV shows.â Your lips pressed together hard enough to ache. âAnd Iâm done dealing with 035âs shit. I see him again, itâs on sight.â
You slid the last shell into place with a satisfying snap.
âPlease refrain from any self-inflicted gunshot wounds until after you retrieve SCP-682.â
âI shall do my best.â
The laptop bag across your chest, with as many boxes of shotgun shells loaded into the stock bags as possible, and the actual shotgun slung across your back, you were starting to feel like a regular pack mule.
âIf I survive this, Iâm going to be in the best shape of my life,â you said to no one. 079 certainly wouldnât care.
You were stallingâmentally, anyway. Physically, you were following the maintenance tunnels by which doors opened and which remained closed, leading you to your destination. A destination you desperately didnât want to visit.
But the fraction of 079âs programming knew what it was doing, and you didnât see anyoneâhuman or SCPâbefore you made it to the freight elevator. It was unguarded. You didnât like that, and you especially didnât like when you got into the elevator and the doors closed but otherwise didnât move. You pulled 079 out of the bag and opened it, expecting to get another earful of complaints.
Instead, the computer said, âInsert me.â
âOh. Okay.â
You dug around in the bag, having to push aside the boxes of slugs to get at the cable.
âThe underground section is on a different system. Physically separated. I will implant another partition to this sector.â
You did not envy the techs that would have to clean up the network once this was over. If the site reopened, anyway. You didnât know how extensive the damage was, but there was no sign of the guards retaking any of the sections youâd crossed.
âGot it,â you said, inserting the cable into the port next to the card reader. âHow many MTF are down there?â
âNone.â
âAre you sure?â
The floor shifted under your feet as the elevator began its descent.
âYes.â
You watched the screen, though the face never changed.
âDoesnât that seem suspicious? Why would they leave 682 unguarded?â Leahy sure as hell wouldnât leave that particular door unmanned.
âWhen the house is on fire, do you concern yourself with the affairs of the basement?â
ââŚI suppose not.â
079 let its smug silence be its response. You could argue, but there wasnât a point. You were going to the underground facility, and you could trust 079 to get you there safely. Being dead wasnât very useful to the computer SCP.
The elevator ride was just as long as you remembered, and you didnât want to imagine how far down it was, exactly. 079 probably knew. You didnât ask.
The doors parted, and the long tunnel lay before you, the same as before. Nothing had changed, and you hadnât expected it to. The chill of being so far underground was no gentler the second time experienced. The Site Director might not be here to order you into the bedrock depths, but that was a fleeting comfort.
True to 079âs words, no MTF soldiers greeted your arrival. You were alone for the long walk, the computer tucked safely back in the bag. You didnât need directions for this part.
Five minutes on foot and you were once again before the massive vault door. There were no techs to open it for you this time, so you set 079 on the nearby console, opened the computer, and plugged in the cable.
The massive door began its arduous task of opening, 079 clearing the way before you could say a word. You glanced down the dark tunnel, the catwalk disappearing into darkness before it flickered to life, lights now guiding your path.
The underground facility must have had its own power source as well as security system separate from the facility above. You sensed Leahyâs hand in the design. It was smart. You could admit that, begrudgingly, to absolutely no one.
âYou may proceed,â 079 said.
âDo you want to come with me?â
The computer paused. It never paused.
ââŚYes.â
You couldnât hide your smile as you picked up the laptop, keeping it open as you propped it on your arms.
âExcited to see him again?â
You descended the metal stairs from the control platform, careful not to trip in the dim light, steadier on your feet once your path was illuminated by the catwalk lights.
âI do not possess the hardware to experience such a state as âexcited.ââ
âNo? Your fans donât whir a little faster? Your circuits donât strain a bit harder?â
Its fans did, indeed, whir a little faster.
âYou dignify those around you when you choose not to speak.â
âOh, weâre way past dignity, buddy.â
It was nearly silent apart from your booted feet against the metal platform. The remembered fear of the last time you traversed this catwalk lingered on your tongue, bitter and sharp. Despite the chaos of the containment breach and the uncertainty that lay ahead, you felt more in control than your first visit. There was no Site Director to threaten you with unpleasant ultimatums.
You thought of Leahy and what he might be doing to try and quell the breach. From the sound of it, he hadnât been very successful. You wondered if he knew it was you who started it.
You hoped he did.
Static burst from the laptop at the same moment the screen glitched, flicking and stretching out the digital face. You came to a sudden stop.
âWhatâs wrong?â
Your question was answered with a loud, low mechanical groan from further ahead, the kind that came from metal scraping against metal in a way it decidedly shouldnât. The end of the tunnel flickered, and then the loud clang and clatter of something heavy falling to the floor.
âShit,â you said through clenched teeth. You didnât wait for 079 to answer before backing up, moving out of range of whatever was happening in 682âs chamber.
âMust---destroy----theanomaly---" 079âs voice cut in through bits of digital fuzz. âContainment---isfailing---"
â682?â You peered closer at the unstable screen. âBut⌠I thought you wanted to save him. I canât--⌠I wonât kill him.â
âNot---682,â it answered, annoyance conveyed even through the constant glitching. âThe---other---one.â
âOther one? What other one?â
But the screen plunged into darkness, leaving your own frustrated expression staring back at you.
âShit!â
You placed the open laptop on the floor of the catwalk, hoping ifâwhenâyou came back, you could get 079 working again. But you had bigger problems on your hands; vibrations thrummed up the catwalk and the occasional metallic boom told you that you were running out of time.
The chamber at the end of the tunnel was nothing like the way you had left it. The strange panels that had been facing towards the writhing form of 682 were broken or knocked aside, sparks snapping the air as live wires trailed along the walls.
Every hair on your body stood upright as you approached the circular portion of the walkway that went around the floating entity. It had⌠grown. It was difficult to look at, as if staring into the sun, yet it gave off no light of its own. It just simply⌠made your eyes ache, but the longer you stared, the more it came into focus:
A circular black sphere with a silver film over its edges, as if coated in a thin layer of mercury. The event horizon.
682 had called it another entity. A singularity. You knew of an SCP that was a black hole. You hadnât realized it was at Site-20, but then again, the reptile wasnât supposed to be here either.
As you watched, pieces of railing and platform flaked off and spiraled toward the ravenous void that shouldnât exist. Your hair still stood on end, the tips of it being gently tugged toward the gravitational field. It was slowly consuming the room, and if it continued at this rate, it would swallow the rest of the facility and beyond. You couldnât see 682 anywhere, and you wondered if the Site Director had finally gotten what he wanted.
And wouldnât he be so pleased to know at least one of his projects was a success.
That thought more than anything fueled you forward, your fists clenched at your sides as you faced the entity, SCP-123. The protective outer casing had been removed, leaving it in danger of becoming unstable, which it now was. You didnât know if it had become that way because of the breach, or because no one was left to keep it from expanding past the chamber.
Leahy, you idiot.
But what had his instructions been when heâd wanted you to destroy 682? Make physical contact with the anomaly. And when you rooted out the anomalous influence in the patient in medical, youâd also had to touch him. The very touch that had weakened 049.
But how were you supposed to touch a black hole?
A sharp cry cut through your indecision. Impossibly, a grey snout erupted from the anomalous mass, sharp teeth bared in an agonized snarl before disappearing back into the void.
682 was alive! As soon as that fact was made apparent, it simply didnât matter what you could or couldnât do. You had to try something before there was nothing left of him.
You stepped up to the edge of the circular railing, wobbling as the gravitation pull tugged harder with every inch closer. It felt wrong, like falling deep into black water and not knowing which way was up or down.
But this wasnât just any collapsed gravitational mass. It was one that shouldnât exist. It was anomalous. An SCP, just like any other. And if it was close enough to affect you, then it stood to reason that the reverse should also be true.
The tugging on your clothes and hair became more insistent, the pull washing over your skin with a magnetic touch, threatening to lift you off the catwalk. But you denied it, shunted the sensation aside, centering your weight. You imagined yourself as too heavy for the anomaly to lift, and the gravitational pull seemed to ease.
But you didnât want to shut out the anomaly. You had to draw it in, just as it was trying to do the same to you.
You had no clue what you were doing, running on the same instinct that drew you to the time-displaced patient. Closing your eyes, you reached out a hand toward the entity, doing the same with your thoughts.
The reaction was instantaneous. A howling wind rushed from the entity, forcing your hair back from your face as it whipped past. The singularity burst open, breaching past its own event horizon, expanding in a misshapen, gaping wound.
But past the wounded edges lay thousands of distant stars, opulent nebulas, and asteroid fields of swirling gas and ice. You could see it even with your eyes closed, viewing past the collapsed mass to what could be the other side of the universe.
A slow smile spread across your face, the wind sweeping over your skin leaving you unburned, but the panels behind you caught fire, and what didnât catch ablaze melted down the walls.
You opened your eyes. Whatever fear in you had fled the moment youâd connected with the entity. You just wanted to see it, and you stared in wonder as your hand seemed to float in the deep reaches of space. It should have been impossible; the cold would have frozen your hand immediately, and the unshielded radiation would quickly lead to an agonizing death.
But none of that happened. It was beautiful. It shouldnât exist, but you were glad it did, even if it had been twisted for someone elseâs purpose into the horrific and cruel.
Your smile faded. As much as you might wish there was another way, 682 needed to be free, and the facility above wouldnât survive much longer with an open wormhole beneath it.
You were about to try and figure out how to destroy the anomaly when you noticed a much closer celestial object. A planet orbiting a blue star, but it seemed to absorb none of its light, covered darkness even on the day side.
As you looked closer, you realized you were wrong. The planet wasnât covered by permanent night, it was covered with a black sea. This became more apparent when the planet turned and you caught a glimpse of an isolated continent, twinkling lights glowing along its entire surface, as if it was one giant metropolis.
Something tugged at the edges of your thoughts, a vie for your attention even more enticing than the one of the black hole. It seemed to⌠call to you. Inviting you to dive into its glittering depths and never resurface.
You shuddered and took a breath, steadying yourself against the alien pull. It grew stronger. You tried not to panic, sensing that losing your control now would cause the temporary opening to tear apart, taking you and the facility along with it.
You closed your eyes and blocked out everything else, focusing on the feeling you got whenever 049 was beside youâsolid, steadfast, serene, even in moments that could lead to his death. He didnât waver easily, and you borrowed that strength, your own too easily forgotten in moments where your survival relied on your ability to do the impossible.
Slowly closing your fingers until it curled into a fist, you reached out for the connection between the chamber and the other sideâand began to squeeze.
The wind swirling around the chamber picked up speed, a howling gale that shook more panels from the walls, the lights dangerously flickering and threatening to leave you in darkness. The celestial window shrank in wobbly fits and starts, until it finally stabilized and condensed into the closed palm of your hand.
And then it was simply⌠gone, and the image of the glowing city faded into the back of your mind, like a disturbing dream forgotten in the light of morning.
The chamber was eerily quiet, the only light source from a few working overhead light panels. It looked like remnants of a warzone, though it was unclear what weapons had been used and who the casualties were.
â682?â you called softly into the darkness.
There was no response aside from the occasional stray spark and groaning shift of metal.
Had you been too late? What would happen to 049 now?
You sat on the half-melted catwalk, burying your face in your hands. Even if 049âs fate didnât hang in the balance, youâd wanted to succeed. Youâd never been entirely onboard with the Foundationâs obsession with destroying 682. None of them stopped to think that maybe the humanity-hating reptile hated them because they wouldnât stop trying to kill him.
His last containment cell had been an acid-filled pool, for Christâs sakeâ
âTook you long enough.â
Dropping your hands, a quick glance around the chamber didnât reveal the owner of that familiar voice. No towering, monstrous silhouettes, or glowing eyes in the darkness.
âAim lower.â
You looked down at what appeared to be a grey gecko clinging to the tip of your boot.
ââŚ682?â
âIn the flesh. What remains of it.â
He narrowed his yellow eyes, but the intimidation was hard to take seriously when he could fit into the palm of your hand. Despite his diminutive size, his deep timbre remained the same, though it had lost its booming quality. Still⌠that voice coming out of that tiny body made the whole thing surreal, bordering on ridiculous.
Donât laugh.
âIâm glad to see youâre alive. I was afraid I was too late, or I screwed upââ
He zipped up your leg to rest atop your knee faster than you could blink.
âWhere is 079?â
This close up, it was easier to tell he wasnât a normal gecko. At least, you were fairly sure most geckoes didnât have green manes trailing from their heads down their backs.
âA little further down the walkway,â you said, tilting your head toward the catwalk. âI think 123 was interfering with the electronics.â
682 bared his tiny but sharp teeth.
âTake me to him.â
You put a palm against the grated floor to get to your feet, but 682 didnât move from your knee.
âUh⌠can I pick you up? Or touch you at all? I donât want to hurt you.â
682 made a noise as if he found the idea ludicrous and maybe a little bit insulting.
âYour touch will only cease my healing function. I would advise not crushing me while you carry me. For your sake.â
079 had delivered the same threat about the laptop. Suddenly, the fun-sized reptile was no longer adorably harmless. Not when your frail human fingers were so close to his needle teeth.
âI wonât.â
You held out your hand, and 682 gave a small hop into your palm.
Okay, maybe he was a little bit adorable.
You rose to your feet, careful not to squish the small body cupped within your hands. 682 didnât look back at the room that served as his torture chamber, and neither did you.
âYou shouldnât have brought 079 so close,â he grumbled as you walked. âItâs reckless. Stupid.â
âTell that to 079. He wanted to see you. Wouldnât leave without you.â
If 682 was pleased by the news, he gave no outward sign of it, but reading the body language and facial expressions of small reptiles wasnât exactly in your skillset. Still, you found their whole dynamic to be⌠interesting. Were they friends? Lovers? Some other undefinable thing that only made sense to them? Whatever it was, at least you caught on to the fact you could refer to 079 as a âheâ instead of an âit.â Getting your nose munched on by a pint-sized terror was something you wanted to avoid.
As soon as 079 was in sight, still where you left him on the floor, 682 leapt from your hands and practically zoomed over the open laptop. As soon as his paws touched the keyboard, the screen flickered to life, 079âs face illuminating the reptile.
âSCP-682. You are still functioning.â The computer paused. âI am⌠glad.â
682 stared up at the screen, a pink tongue flicking out of his mouth before disappearing, surely a sign he was pleased.
âLikewise, old friend.â
You stepped forward.
âI hate to break up the reunionââ
682 whirled and hissed at you, his tail stiff and his head thrown back to make him appear bigger than he was.
You held up your hands.
âOkay. You can stay where you are, but I need to carry you both out of here.â
The reptile closed its snout and gave you an impressive stink eye for only being a couple inches off the ground.
âYou may pick me up,â 079 intoned dully. âShe has not dropped me. Yet.â
682âs tail flicked at the side, finally turning his back to you to face the screen, apparently satisfied with 079âs glowing recommendation of your competency.
It was awkward carrying an open laptop with a miniature menace seated on the keyboard with a shotgun slung over your back, but it wasnât any worse than what youâd already endured. You tried not to pay attention to their conversation, which wasnât hard considering the two of them acted as if you werenât there. Their main focus seemed to be catching up since the breach at Site-19. It was a brief topic, as 079 had spent the time on a thumb drive in a bag, and 682 had been trapped in a looping gravitational blender.
By the time youâd reached the elevator and plugged 079 into the port, theyâd moved on to their shared hatred of humanity and how the humans hadnât even been able to destroy the two SCPs properly. You suddenly felt sorry for 049. Is this what it had been like during the breach at Site-19? Ignored by the wonder twins, only to have the mask draped over him like an itchy blanket?
As soon as the elevator doors shut behind you and it began its quick ascent, you interrupted 079 going on about fascinating ways the facility was rigged to kill its inhabitants.
âThere is even a gas nozzle attached to each staff quarters in case any Foundation personnel flee for shelter during a total breachââ
âWhere is 049?â
The lizard turned to look up at you, and even the computer paused, as if only just remembering you were still there.
âI did what you asked,â you reminded the screen. âI held up my end of the bargain.â
682 snorted, tail flicking like a catâs.
âWhat do you want with that old relic?â he asked. âHeâs only deadly within the scope of his reach, and we donât have time for his asinine attempts at resurrection.â
Before you could respond, 079 said, âThis one had sexual intercourse with SCP-049.â
682 let out a guffaw.
âThat-that has nothing to do with it!â
âBut it doesnât hurt.â
Your face burned worse at his toothy grin. How had it come to this, being mocked by SCPs for yourâadmittedly strangeârelationship with 049? Not that youâd had much of a choice with what had happened between you, but still. It was the principle of it.
You ignored the amused reptile and glared at 079.
âI do not know where SCP-049 is currently being held,â the computer relented. âI can only relay his last known location.â
âWhich is?â
âMedical Suite B with Site Director Leahy.â
Your stomach dropped so fast you had to fight down the nausea.
âHow long ago?â
âImmediately following SCP-106âs release,â 079 said. âThe entity went directly for the medical wing. Its presence interferes with electronics. I do not know what took place in the infirmary, the observation equipment no longer functions. But SCP-049 has not been captured by any other cameras. It is reasonable to say, he did not leave the room.â
You leaned back against the elevator wall, trying not to let the news steal what little hope you had left.
âThen⌠we go to the medical wing. Get in that room, see what happened.â
âOr,â 079 said, âyou could ask the Site Director.â
âLeahy?â You straightened. âWhere is he?â
âEntrenched within his office. There are four site facility guards with him, all heavily armed.â
âSo, heâs⌠fine? I donât understand.â You rubbed your forehead. âWhy would 106 go straight to the infirmary but leave the Site Director unharmed? We know from past incident reports that heâs intelligent enough to recognize individuals. He must know who Leahy is.â
It shouldnât be possible for a reptile and computer to exchange a glance, yet they did.
âHistorically, the old ghoul hasnât been fond of 049âs attempts to cure him,â 682 said when the other SCP remained silent. âMy guess? He went for the easier prey, and heâs biding his time with the Site Director.â
Easier prey?!
âThen we-we have to go straight to the infirmary! We have to help him!â
How much time had you wasted running errands for 079 after 035 had held you captive? He should have told you what happened to 049, he should have let you go to himâ
âYou donât want to step foot inside that room without knowing what youâre walking into,â the reptile said, his tone unusually even. When he spoke to you, it was generally with rage or mockery, but this was different, like he was trying to convince you how reasonable he was being. âIf thereâs one thing 106 enjoys besides hunting, itâs setting traps and lying in wait.â
â106 canât hurt me!â
âArrogance,â 682 spit, some of his venom returning. âAre you the one at 106âs mercy?â
Your mouth snapped shut, the midpoint of your chest aching.
âMy advice?â the reptile continued, âGet to the Site Director. Find out exactly what happened. And go into that room with a hell of a lot more power than 079 and I possess.â
Your laugh was a small, hopeless thing.
âI canât think of anything more powerful than the two of you.â
âAs flattered as I am, Iâm still regaining my mass.â 682 paced across the keyboard, his tiny claws making clacking noises on the keys. âSubsuming flesh will accelerate the process, but thatâs not what I mean by power. You will need to prepare.â
682 stopped his pacing and looked up at 079. The computer spoke.
âSafe Object Storage.â
âWhat about it?â
âThat is your next destination.â
You swallowed down the tightness in your throat. As it stood, a couple of guns wouldnât be able to get past Leahyâs guards to interrogate him, let alone handle 106 on your own. You had little choice but to continue trusting 079.
âWill it help?â
682 turned to you, his mouth spreading in a sharp grin.
âItâll help.â

The thing about cybersecurity within the context of dbh is that it is entirely possible that a significant percentage of things androids don't even need to "hack" as security measures in place of existing devices are made to stop humans from hacking them. ANDROIDS, however, may be made to be able to interact and exchange data with those devices BY DEFAULT, especially if device's manufacturer is CyberLife or one if it's filials/partners (I think CyberLife as a mega corporation is like Nestle that owns like 20+ different sub-companies like Maggi, Purina, NescafĂŠ, LĂłreal, Garnier, Aqua Panna... just to name a few)
Especially considering how androids are this really closed-up system that wasn't made to be accessed like computers. Quite literally everything about their inner software and ways to manipulate it is probably extremely proprietary, so end-user has absolutely no way to see what exactly androids are exchanging with other devices or what is it they are processing at the moment and how. Thing is, the communication between an android and other devices probably is encrypted but like, between androids and devices, so humans can only detect the fact of some packets being exchanged but can't really see the content of any of it. After all, androids are likely made to be easily compatible with all those smart home suite, but because humans aren't actually granted admin/root rights to their androids, it's "secure" for androids (any CyberLife android for that matter) to communicate with all those devices without additional authorization because they are already seen as authorized. Even those people who deal with android support and maintenance are probably only granted a fraction of actual admin rights, for troubleshooting and things like that.
Back to androids smoothly communicating with other smart devices. Even if their network traffic is visible, it is possible to hide the fact of them communicating by making it look like androids are communicating with other "middle-man" devices that have access to an actual target. So, in plain terms it means that android can get access to, let's say your phone by communicating to your smart air-conditionair or something that (of course) has its own app on your phone and air-conditionair is allowed to send data to your phone. So it will look like android is exchanging data with air-conditionair and air-conditionair is exchanging data with your phone, but in reality it's this android communicating with your phone.

I think the future looks something like: large renewable deployment that will still never be as big as current energy consumption, extractivism of every available mineral in an atmosphere of increasing scarcity, increasing natural disasters and mass migration stressing the system until major political upheavals start kicking off, and various experiments in alternative ways to live will develop, many of which are likely to end in disaster, but perhaps some prove sustainable and form new equilibria. I think the abundance we presently enjoy in the rich countries may not last, but I don't think we'll give up our hard won knowledge so easily, and I don't think we're going back to a pre-industrial past - rather a new form of technological future.
That's the optimistic scenario. The pessimistic scenarios involve shit like cascading economic and crop failures leading to total gigadeaths collapse, like intensification of 'fortress europe' walled enclaves and surveillance apparatus into some kinda high tech feudal nightmare, and of course like nuclear war. But my brain is very pessimistic in general and good at conjuring up apocalyptic scenarios, so I can't exactly tell you the odds of any of that. I'm gonna continue to live my life like it won't suddenly all end, because you have to right?
Shit that developed in the context of extraordinarily abundant energy and compute like LLMs and crypto and maybe even streaming video will have a harder time when there's less of it around, but the internet will likely continue to exist - packet-switching networks are fundamentally robust, and the hyper-performant hardware we use today full of rare earths and incredibly fine fabs that only exist at TSMC and Shenzhen is not the only way to make computing happen. I hold out hope that our present ability to talk to people in faraway countries, and access all the world's art and knowledge almost instantly, will persist in some form, because that's one of the best things we have ever accomplished. But archival and maintenance is a continual war against entropy, and this is a tremendously complex system alike to an organism, so I can not say what will happen.
